March 22 – Bishop’s Visitation – Mark your calendar – this is a Wednesday. Bishop Ely will be with us from 10 AM – 8 PM. We will have events that everyone can attend, a vestry meeting with the Bishop and some time with him in the larger community. CONTEMPLATIVE QUIET Prayer and Meditation- is held in St. Paul's Sanctuary the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month   5:30 to 6:30.  Come when you can and stay as long as you want.  If you are not able to get to the sanctuary, take what time you have from wherever you are for prayer and meditation.  For more information about Contemplative Quiet Prayer and Meditation, please contact Diana or Holly

• Having Difficult Conversations About Race.  Wednesdays, Noon – 2 p.m. (Wednesdays Nov. 16, Dec. 14, Jan. 18th at the Howe Library in Hanover.)  This series of conversations grew out of an OSHER course, and is open to everyone. February 11 – Knit and Purl Retreat Day - COME ONE, COME ALL to our winter Retreat at Parish House, Saturday, February 11th, 10-5.. We will have refreshments, munchies, and soup and bread lunch.  Come for a visit or for the whole day. Bring your hand crafts or come learn a new handcraft. We look forward to seeing you! February 12 - Brookside Nursing Home Ecumenical Service - Our next Brookside Service will be February 12. Everyone is welcome to join us. Volunteers arrive 1:45 and service is 2-2:30. If you have questions or want to volunteer, please contact Holly

February 13 –Women’s Potluck 6-8 - Women of the parish are invited to a potluck at Kate Townsend’s home from 6-8 pm on Monday, February 13. The plan is for a “faith” (no “assigned” dishes, bring whatever you want) women’s potluck (to be mostly social!). Kate’s house is: 197 Ravenswood Terrace, White River Junction, Vermont 05001

February 13 - Bible Study – Our next gathering is Monday, February 13, at 7 PM in the Parish House. Our discussions last about an hour. Each session is stand-alone so come when you can. All are welcome! Here are the readings we will be discussing: Leviticus 19:1-2,9-18, 1 Corinthians 3:10-11,16-23, and Matthew 5:38-48. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month.

Lenten Series – Having Conversations that Matter – Tuesday in Lent 6:30-8:00 in the Parish Hall. March 7^th, 14^th, 21^st, 28^th, and April 4^th – mark you r calendar today!

February 5 - Parish Discretionary Fund next week – On the first Sunday of each month the loose offering and any checks marked discretionary fund in the memo is given to the Parish Discretionary Fund. This fund is used to help meet the needs of people in our area during difficult times in their lives. The funds are generally used to help with electric bills or car repairs, rent or securing a security deposit for a family. We are finally able to start distributing funds again. The need continues to be extremely high with requests coming in almost every day. Please be as generous as you are able. This is an important ministry of our Parish. Thank you, Scott

February 5 - NVC/ Non-Violent Communication - There will be a Non-Violent Communication Class, 9am-4pm   February 5th, at Briggs Opera House. If you are interested, please contact Holly to register. 

February 5 - The AD Church - We are very excited about the upcoming AD Church this Sunday, February 5^th at 1:30 pm.  For those that are not aware, the AD Church is a worship service designed specifically for families with Alzheimer’s/ dementia. [I have posted more information below. ] This service is graciously hosted by Rev. Silfies and the Greater Hartford United Church of Christ (http://www.vtcucc.org/churches/Hartford.html )  which is located at  1721 Maple street/ Rt. 14, Hartford Village, north of White River Junction, South of Sharon, VT.  If you have any questions, please contact us at mbyers@terracecommunities.com or call at 802-280-1910 and ask for Mick.  We hope to see you and your family there!   

February 7 – Lenten Series Planning meeting - 10 AM - There will be a planning meeting for the Lenten series, ’Having Conversations That Matter’, on Tuesday, February 7th, at 10 AM in the Parish House.  Diane, Amy and Katy are convening the meeting to further develop the draft for the next meetings of the co-sponsoring groups.  Please consider joining us -- if you'd like to think about ground rules, readings, good discussion questions, ideas for worship, how to make people feel welcome, etc.  Send an email if you'd like to share thoughts, materials, or suggestions, but cannot come.

February 7 –Women’s Potluck 6-8 - Women of the parish are invited to a potluck at Kate Townsend’s home from 6-8 pm on Tuesday, February 7. The plan is for a “faith” (no “assigned” dishes, bring whatever you want) women’s potluck (to be mostly social!) at Kate Townsend’s home on Tuesday, February 7 from 6-8. February 9 - Mindfulness Basic Stress Release - Women's Resource Center will offer a free introduction to MBSR class 9-3 February 9th at Women's Resource Center. If you are interested, please call Women's Resource Center to register. An eight week MBST will be taught in the spring.

February 11 – Knit and Purl Retreat Day - Knit and Purl Fellowship will hold our annual Retreat on February 11th, 10-5pm at our Parish House.  Beading, knitting, sewing, coloring, cross stitch or any other hand craft is welcome.  Come enjoy a day of fellowship. We will have hot drinks, lunch, and munchies throughout the day as we visit and share for a short visit or all day.  Neighbors, friends and family are welcome. 

February 12 – Conserned about Racism meeting – after church in the parish house. We will be discussing our Upcoming Lenten Series. All are welcome!

February 12 - Brookside Nursing Home Ecumenical Service - Our next Brookside Service will be February 12. Volunteers arrive 1:45 and service is 2-2:30. If you have questions or want to volunteer, please contact Holly

February 13 - Bible Study – Our next gathering is Monday, February, at 7 PM in the Parish House. Our discussions last about an hour. Each session is stand-alone so come when you can. All are welcome! Here are the readings we will be discussing: Leviticus 19:1-2,9-18, 1 Corinthians 3:10-11,16-23, and Matthew 5:38-48. We meet on the 2^nd and 4^th Monday of the month.

March 20 - Listen Community Dinner - March 20th will be our first Listen Community Dinner for 90-100 people. If you have the interest and the time, please contact Holly.  St. Paul's will be serving five meals beginning in March 20th. we provide meals every other month. The 2017 dates are: March 20th, May 15th, July 17th, September 18th and November 20th.  This outreach ministry in our community is appreciated by those who come to eat at LISTEN. EFM and Noah’s Ark - As I proceeded through the curriculum of year one in my Education for Ministry studies I was fascinated with its mythology. Pete LaPre's discussions of the Exodus were very enlightening and spurred on my curiosity into things biblical that weren't quite like lore, myths, and mysticism portrayed it. For example, in my early days I was a competitive sailor and, quite naturally, I was attracted to Noah's ark. You know the traditional story and icon. January 14 - An Invitation from the United Valley Interfaith Project (UVIP) - On Saturday, January 14, 2017, you are invited to join the United Valley Interfaith Project (UVIP) for an informal/creative discussion.  It is an opportunity to share/discuss/listen on how we can continue to prioritize and move forward in our lives/our community and within our own social structures.

     This is an open forum and you are invited to join us.  It is scheduled for Saturday, January 14, 2016 from 2:00 - 5:00 PM at the First Congregational Church in Lebanon (on the green).  

     Come, join us and meet many of the other UVIP team members from the other faith groups.

We begin with ringing of a soft bell, reading a short scripture passage followed by silence. Contemplative prayer gives an opportunity to deepen our relationship with ourselves and with God. All are welcome to join us in prayer, meditation, and walking meditation going clockwise.  For more information, please contact Diana or Holly. If you are not able to come, join us in prayer from wherever you are.

January 23 – Bible Study – Our next gathering is Monday, January 23, at 7 PM in the Parish House. Our discussions last about an hour and a half. Each session is stand-alone so come when you can. All are welcome! Here are the readings we will be discussing: Micah 6:1-8, 1 Corinthians 1:18-31, and Matthew 5:1-12. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month..

January 25 - Next meeting of the group exploring ‘How We Care for Each Other’ - The next meeting will be Wednesday, January 25th, at 6:30 in the Parish House. This group is not meeting tomorrow, January 10th.  Anyone interested is welcome to join the conversation. 

February 11 – Knit and Purl Retreat Day - Knit and Purl Fellowship will hold our annual Retreat on February 11th, 10-5pm at our Parish House.  Beading, knitting, sewing, coloring, cross stitch or any other hand craft is welcome.  Come enjoy a day of fellowship. We will have hot drinks, lunch, and munchies throughout the day as we visit and share for a short visit  or all day.  Neighbors, friends and family are welcome.

2017 LISTEN COMMUNITY Dinners Dates-  St. Paul's will be serving five meals beginning in March 20th. we provide meals every other month. The 2017 dates are: March 20th, May 15th, July 17th, September 18th and November 20th.  This outreach ministry in our community is appreciated by those who come to eat at LISTEN.

Holly needs a volunteer to help her with planning and being at Listen Center 3:00-6:00 for each date. Please contact Holly if you can help any of the 2017 dates or for all five 2017 dates.

Knit and Purl Fellowship -  meets the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month 6:30 at Parish House. All are welcome and all hand projects are welcome. Come and join the fellowship. Our next two gathering will be January 2nd and 16th.

Annual Reports Due by January 21 - The Annual Report is an important record of our life together at St. Paul's, and also serves as a guide to our ministries and fellowship events.  Everyone who has chaired a committee or a ministry is responsible for submitting an annual report.  Paula Stevens has (again) agreed to compile the reports into a master document that will be distributed electronically before the Annual Meeting on Saturday, January 28.  Please send reports to Paula at paulajstevens@aol.com no later than Saturday, January 21.  If you have any questions, email or call Paula at 802 296-3123.

January 8 - Brookside Eucharist Service -  is held second Sunday of the month September- June.  Our next service Brookside will be January, 8th, 2-2:30. Volunteers arrive at 1:45 to help set up the room by moving tables and chairs  and helping bring residents to the dining room.  If you would like to help at the Brookside service January 8th or following months through June, please contact Scott or Holly

Holly is looking for an assistant who can be at the Center by 3pm on the day a meal is served. Please contact her if you can assist.  We will be serving 90-100 or more meals each time and will need people to prepare main course and dessert. We will also need 6-8 volunteers to help in the kitchen the day we are serving.   A signup sheet will be posted four weeks prior to date we serve.  If you have questions or want more information, please contact Holly.

Thank You from Anne and Bruce Taylor   Anne and Bruce are very appreciative of the healthy tasty meals our parishioners have made when meals were needed. Anne is improving and Bruce is cooking more, therefore, the last meal prepared for Anne and Bruce will be January 5th. If there are meals needed in the weeks ahead, Holly will  contact  parishioners.

Quiet Contemplative Prayer and Meditation-  is the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month at 5:30 in St. Paul's sanctuary. All are welcome for peaceful time of prayer, meditation, and walking meditation going clockwise. This quiet time begins with ringing of a soft bell, a short reading, followed by silence for an hour or earlier if you need to leave. This quiet time is open to anyone in our families, our neighborhoods, and  beyond.

Organize and Clean out Closet -  Before our Annual meeting, Holly will be re organizing and cleaning the closet closest to Scott's robe room and the  library.  Holly needs two people to help with this project. If you want to help, please contact her to set a convenient time to meet at church.

Meals for Anne and Bruce Taylor - we are preparing meals for Anne and Bruce for Tuesdays and Thursdays. The meals can be delivered to the church fridge by noon on those days and  Bruce will pick them up. We have volunteers through January 3rd. If you can prepare a meal January 5th, 10th, and 12th, please let Holly know. We will check in with Anne and Bruce on the need for meals into the following weeks.  We thank you for your help! Holly

January 1 - Parish Discretionary Fund Ingathering – This Sunday the loose offering and any checks marked discretionary fund in the memo is given to the Parish Discretionary Fund. This fund is used to help meet the needs of people in our area during difficult times in their lives. The funds are generally used to help with electric bills or car repairs, rent or securing a security deposit for a family. We are finally able to start distributing funds again. The need continues to be extremely high with requests coming in almost every day. Please be as generous as you are able. This is an important ministry of our Parish. Thank you, Scott

Then, we will plan meals for the last two weeks of January and into February. Please let Holly know if you can provide one meal the first two weeks in January.  Anne is the primary cook in the household  and she will not be able to cook for some time.  Please prepare meals with chicken, turkey, or fish. Dairy products are to be eliminated. A complete listing of foods they can eat is available at church. Please contact Diana or Holly with questions about planning a meal.   Thank you for help!

Announcements

November 20 - Stewardship Update:  By now you should have received your pledge packet via US Mail for St. Paul’s Stewardship Campaign 2017.  We ask that you please prayerfully fill out your pledge form and return it during the pledge in-gathering on this coming Sunday, November 20th.  In appreciation, the Vestry will be hosting a between-services Coffee Hour at 9:00 am that day.  As this coming Sunday is also the kick-off of Thanksgiving week, we are asking parishioners to bring non-perishable food items for the Haven that day as well.  If you need extra pledge forms there will be some available at the church on Sunday or if you wish to have a copy sent electronically, please contact Pete Lapre at ardee603@yahoo.com or by phone at 603-728-8079.

Quiet Contemplative Prayer and Meditation - is on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month 5:30-6:30 in St. Paul's Sanctuary.  The lights will be turned down low and the heat will be on. We begin with ringing of a soft bell, reading a short scripture passage followed by silence.  If you are not able to come, join us in prayer from wherever you are.

 November 19 – Altar Guild - Saturday Nov 19 at 9:00 AM. The Altar Guild will meet to get the church ready for Advent.  We will be polishing the silver, brass, and copper; Preparing the advent wreath; putting out the Christmas Flower envelopes; and meeting to discuss items of interest and making a new schedule.  All members of the parish are welcome to join us. 

 November 21 - Listen Community Dinner -We still need three more Beef Stews, three more Gingerbread, and three more cans whip cream.  The food can be delivered at church Sunday, 20th, Monday at 2:30 at St. Paul's or, at Listen Center November 21st between 3-4:00pm.  We thank you for your help in  making  a successful meal for our neighbors.

 November 29 - Caring for Each Other -

What are the life challenges we face?  How does our church community respond in relevant ways?  How do we support each other when it really matters most?

You are invited to join this exploration on Tuesday, November 29^th at 6:30 in the Parish House.  These compelling questions developed during a small group discussion at a quarterly community meeting.  Some ideas include:

·      Caring for an aging loved one (in person or long distance), possibly a focus on caregiving for those with dementia.

·      Coping with the challenges of our own or another’s mental health issues

·      Supporting family members in difficult transitions

·      Growing communication and intimacy skills in significant relationships

We will be exploring ways to contribute to the mutual care of our church family, possibly through small groups, training, book study,  or one-on-one conversations.   Please feel free to contact any of us with thoughts or questions:  Jill Fischer, Katy Chaffee, Leslie Black, Pam Hanson. 

 November 30 - Advent Discussion Series:  Please join us for the Advent Discussion Series facilitated by Pete Lapre starting on Wednesday evening, November 30^th.  The format would be (as in the past two years) a loosely structured discussion of the previous Sunday's Old Testament and Gospel readings--- such topics as historical background, how the readings relate to one another, what we feel in the readings specifically speaks to us, what the readings might mean to us in our greater community, and why these readings may have been chosen for inclusion in the common lectionary for Advent.  The sessions would be held in the parish house on the four Wednesday evenings in Advent  (11/30, 12/7, 12/14 and 12/21) from 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm.   We will be spending 35-40 minutes on each reading and ending with Compline.  There would be no books or required reading as we will be only using the lectionary scripture, and you are welcome to attend any or all of the sessions.

 December 4 – Five Minutes of Ministry – in response to suggestions made at the quarterly meeting on October 16, beginning December 4 we will have a Five Minutes of Ministry presentation during our Sunday worship from each of the committees and groups in the parish. In addition, during coffee hour, members of that group will be available to answer questions and provide more information regarding their group. These will be done on a weekly basis until all groups have had the opportunity to present and then we will have a monthly presentation by each group so they have an opportunity to report back the work they are currently doing.

 December 11 - Brookside Eucahrist Service - our next service at Brookside will be December 11th. Volunteers come 1:45 and service is 2-2:30.

 December 17 – Solstice Retreat - 10am-7pm in Parish House. This is our second annual Retreat. It is offered by the Knit and Purl Fellowship as an opportunity to gather together and finish up those last-minute Christmas gifts. Bring your craft projects, or not, for a day, or part of a day) of fellowship and good food (serve soups, vegetables and dip, ice cream sundaes, tea and coffee and more). We will meet very close to Winter Solstice when we celebrate time of nourishment and joy of the season! If you have any questions, please speak to Holly Hall. Mark your calendars today!

Prayers of the People Reminder – This is the last Sunday of the month and the list of names in our Prayers of the People will be deleted and we will start fresh next month. Please submit your prayers requests throughout the month and they will be added to our list on a weekly basis. Please send those requests to Holly Hall or announcements.spc@gmail.com . A reminder on Faithful Voting

Faith informs our values, sense of purpose, and hope that God’s realm will grow upon earth.  One of the key ways that we bring those values and the voice of faith to the national ‘table’ is by taking our faith into the voting booth and voting!  Both Vermont and New Hampshire have voter turnout better than the national average. In 2012 voter turnout was about 58% nationally, 70.2% in New Hampshire, and 60.7 in Vermont.  Wouldn’t it be great if St. Paul’s participation was better than that!

We can’t know the exact figure, but we can have a pretty good idea if each of our voting eligible members fills out a “Pledge to Vote” card provided by the United Valley Interfaith Project (UVIP).  Thanks, Scott and the UVIP team

November 6 - Laying on of Hands and Healing Prayers – if you wish to receive laying on our hands you are invited to gather at the Baptismal Font (just as you entered the church) during communion immediately after you have received communion. You may ask for healing prayers for yourself and/or for others.

November 6 - Parish Discretionary Fund Ingathering – This Sunday the loose offering and any checks marked discretionary fund in the memo is given to the Parish Discretionary Fund. This fund is used to help meet the needs of people in our area during difficult times in their lives. The funds are generally used to help with electric bills or car repairs, rent or securing a security deposit for a family. We are finally able to start distributing funds again. The need continues to be extremely high with requests coming in almost every day. Please be as generous as you are able. This is an important ministry of our Parish. Thank you, Scott

November 7 - Knit and Purl Fellowship - will meet next 11/7, 6:30.  We are doing any kind of hand craft and making creations to sell for upcoming Holiday Bazaar, November 12th. Please come join us and share your ideas. 

Novemebr 10 - Caring Ministry Meeting - Our next meeting will be Nov. 10th, 7 PM in the church library. We look forward to seeing everyone who is part of  Prayer and Healing Ministries and Pastoral Comfort. If you have questions, please contact Scott.

November 12 – Holiday Bazaar – Saturday, 9 AM to 3 PM

St. Paul’s Holiday Bazaar is next week Saturday, November 12!   It is time to work together to make this year’s Bazaar as success! How can you help? We are looking for all kinds of jewelry, handmade items, as well as gifts items (perhaps you have a gift item to re-gift), white elephant items, any old or new Christmas decorations for home or the tree. Please bring all these items on November 2 or ASAP after that date.  Please everyone (men and children included) put on your aprons and bake or make goodies for the Food Sale (pies, bread, cookies, fudge, candy, pickles, baked beans, bars, Rice Krispy treats, sauces, etc.) After church on November 6, we will move all the Bazaar things from the parish house basement to the parish hall. This will include boxes, bins, tables, etc., so we will need lots of help! You are invited to help sort, price and display items throughout the week following November 6. For more information contact Jill Devins. Thank you!

November 21 - Listen Community Dinner - Our last Listen Dinner for 2016 will be November 21st, organized and planned by Holly and Judi Shank.  Our menu will be Beef Stew, (carrots, potato, beef) with Gingerbread and whip cream for dessert. We plan on serving one hundred people plus seconds and take home meals. We need your help to provide a meal for our neighbors. We need people to provide the food and we will need six volunteers to help in the kitchen. The signup sheet is posted and await you name to help us prepare food for 100+ guests. If you have questions, please ask Judi Shank or Holly Hall. Thank you for helping to feed our neighbors.

December 17 – Solstice Retreat - 10am-7pm in Parish House. Offered by the Knit and Purl Fellowship as an opportunity to gather together and finish up those last-minute Christmas gifts. Bring your craft projects, or not, for a day, or part of a day) of fellowship and good food (serve soups, vegetables and dip, ice cream sundaes, tea and coffee and more). Quiet Contemplative Prayer - St. Paul's Church sanctuary will be open on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month 5:30-6:30. At 5:30, a soft bell will ring and a short reading will be read, followed by quiet prayer, meditation and walking meditation in the same direction in the sanctuary. Passing on the Button Baton

     As I take my leave of this wonderful church

     As Maker of Buttons! It’s brought me much cheer

     But now it is time to relinquish this role –

     So small, but important! – to some willing soul.

     It’s not a hard job. A few hours per quarter

Weston Priory Services - everyone is welcome to attend services at Weston Priory. Please check Weston Priory webpage for listing of daily services and Sabbath Days for the brothers and their retreat times. Holly plans to attend 11:30 service November 26th. Compassionate Communication- (also called Non-Violent Communication (NVC))- I attended an NVC workshop in White River Junction Saturday and Sunday afternoon with eleven other people from the Upper Valley.  I found the experience very enlightening and would like to share some information about the workshop from the booklet we were given.  "NVC is the language of our intention to connect with humanness and aliveness in ourselves and in others. This quality of connection awakens compassion and the desire to contribute to one another's well-being; honest expression of our feelings and needs without blame or judgement". This may have been heard before but worth sharing again. NVC includes much more information which I will share another time.  There will be another NVC class taught in January and again in the spring of 2017 in White River Junction.   Thanks, Holly

• Discretionary Fund Reminder – First Sunday of every month. Please be as generous as possible.
• Laying on of Hands – On the first Sunday of every month those wishing to receive laying on our hands are invited to gather at the Baptismal Font (just as you entered the church) immediately after you have received communion.
• Leadership Team Meeting – every Wednesday 9:30-11:30am
• Worship Team meets – 2nd Thursday of the month in the Church Library at 4pm, all are welcome to attend.
