October 30 - Micah Celebration-* 3:00-5:30 - Congratulations Barbara!* Barbara Coulter is our MICAH HERO from St. Paul's Church. Barbara, and fifteen other heroes, will be honored at the United Valley Interfaith Project's Fifth Annual MICAH Awards Ceremony on Sunday, October 30, 2016. A photo and a bio of Barbara Coulter can be seen and read on the United Valley Interfaith Project Bulletin Board which is located in the hallway. This year the event is being held at the Claremont Senior Center in Claremont, NH. In the past few years we have filled the Listen Community Center in White River. Last year The Listen Community Center was at its maximum, so this year we will be at Claremont Senior Center, a larger facility with ample parking. The Claremont Senior Center is eight minutes from the Ascutney Exit off I-91 South. This event is an opportunity to support Barb and to meet others from all over the Upper Valley. Tickets are $25.00 ($30.00 at the door). They can be purchased from Holly Hall, a member of our vestry. If you would like to buy a ticket, need more information or have questions, please contact me. *October 8 – Apple Fest 2016 at the Haven *– The Upper Valley Apple Corps and Haven warmly invites you to: Apple Fest 2016, Saturday, October 8 from 10 AM – 2 PM. OCTOBER 18 - Tools and Tips for Aging with Dignity: This is a short course developed by seniors for seniors. The course runs for four consecutive Tuesdays, beginning Tuesday, October 18 through Tuesday, November 8, 2016. Two classes are being offered each Tuesday. One is from 10:30 AM to noon. The second class is from 6:30-8:00 PM. The course is free and is being offered at the Upper Valley Senior Center and the Grafton County Senior Citizens Council. October 23 - St. Paul's Racial Justice group will meet after church. After a successful public book club series of 4 sessions last winter and this summer's private parish reading sessions this summer, we will catch up on involvement of those in Black Lives Matter, SURJ (Standing Up for Racial Justice), VT State Police on Committee exploring racial bias in traffic stops and other readings & activities people want to share. We also will discuss further activities and ideas for this group.

*October 24 - Bible Study – *Our next gathering is Monday, October 24, at 7 PM in the Parish House. We will miss Monday October 10 due to Columbus Day. Our discussions last about an hour. Each session is stand-alone so come when you can. All are welcome! November 15 - Caring Ministry Meeting - 7pm at Parish House.

November 21 - Listen Community Dinner-St. Paul's last 2016 Listen Community Dinner will be November 21st. Holly Hall and Judi Shank will be planning the meal. We will need six volunteers to help in the Listen Kitchen 3-6. Holly and Judi will put up a sign up with our menu on Parish Hall bulletin board the last week of October.

More information will be shared next week.

Help Wanted – Photgrapher needed*: *Our photo board is sorely in need of updating. Do you have any interest in taking up-to-date photos of our parish family members and posting them on the board in the church hallway? You might have interest but don't want to "go it alone"?? This does not need to be a one-person ministry. If you have any interest in assisting with this valuable ministry which helps us all put names to faces and faces to names, please notify Scott or any member of the Vestry--and thank you!

*Feast of St. Francis and the blessing of the Animals – Sunday, October 2 at 10:00 AM – *bring your pet or picture of your pet to the 10 AM worship for a celebration of St. Francis and our Annual Blessing of the Animals.

Parish Discretionary Fund This week* – October 2* – there is currently no money in our Discretionary Fund to assist people in our area in need of help. We continue to build back the fund from disbursements earlier this year to help two individuals get back on their feet. The request for help increases this time of year due to the change in weather. I turn down requests for help daily. The loose offering and any checks marked discretionary fund in the memo is given to the Parish Discretionary Fund. This fund is used to help meet the needs of people in our area during difficult times in their lives. The funds are used to help with electric bills or car repairs, rent or securing a security deposit for a family. Please be as generous as you are able. This is an important ministry of our Parish. Laying on of Hands and Healing Prayers – this Sunday, October 2 at 10 AM * –* if you wish to receive laying on our hands are invited to gather at the Baptismal Font (just as you entered the church) during communion immediately after you have received communion. You may ask for healing prayers for yourself and/or for others.

New Verger Schedule - I will be putting together a new verger schedule that will go through the end of the year, and hopefully through January. This will include the Sunday after Christmas, which is lessons and carols. Additional readers will be needed on that day (note, this falls on New Year's Day this year). Please notate on the sheet under the current schedule posted in the church hallway, if you would like to be added to the schedule, or if you know certain dates that you are unavailable. September is Hunger Action Month - During the month of September, all Food Shelves and Food Banks are trying to create awareness of hunger nationwide. The color orange is used throughout this month long event to help create awareness. Did you notice the change at the Haven? Parish Discretionary Fund This week* – October 2* – On the first Sunday of each month the loose offering and any checks marked discretionary fund in the memo is given to the Parish Discretionary Fund. This fund is used to help meet the needs of people in our area during difficult times in their lives. The funds are generally used to help with electric bills or car repairs, rent or securing a security deposit for a family. The need has been extremely high with requests coming in almost every day and we currently have no funds. Please be as generous as you are able. This is an important ministry of our Parish. Parish Retreat – Saturday, September 17

Hope you are planning on attending – *We look forward to seeing you all!*

Directions from St. Paul’s. For GPS the name is Camp Coniston-YMCA at 24 Main Camp Road, Croydon, NH: 22 miles, 28 minutes from St. Paul’s. Take I-89 South to Exit 13, Grantham/Eastman. Turn right off the exit ramp, onto Route #10 for 0.6 miles (pass a gas station, Dunkin Donuts and the Grantham Fire Station). Take first left (after Dunbar Hill Rd. on right): Rt. 114 (see small Coniston Sign and Retreat Sign). First right (1.1 miles) onto Stoney Brook Rd. (small Coniston sign and Retreat Sign). 2 miles to Coniston Rd. on right (steeply down). Main Camp Road is the second left. Parking is by the office and out along the entrance road.

Food: Coffee and coffee cakes are provided before 9 in the morning. Lunch sandwich makings (cold cuts, cheese and breads) and drinks are provided. Please bring a salad or cookies for lunch, or snack foods for breaks.

No donation is necessary. The camp and food are within our budget.

Agenda: We will start at 9. Plan to arrive earlier for coffee and settle in. In the morning there will be a story to reflect on, then exercises in tools for spiritual bridge building, then exploration of bridging to other people. There will be a 2 hour break around lunch. There will be a lifeguard and if it is warm enough swimming. Lawn games. Relaxing. There is a trail along the lake. If it rains there is plenty of indoor space for games. In the afternoon we will play some more with attunement. Closing worship will begin at 3 and end at 4.

Youth: Young people will participate with everyone. They will not be separate.

Some possible things to bring for yourself or to share:

· A favorite snack or baked goods to share.

· Two stones that feel comfortable in your hands and are large enough to click together.

· Outdoor or indoor games and/or musical instruments for free choice time.

· Comfort items (pillow, blanket) or free time materials (camera, knitting, book).

· A pen or a device, markers, and journal, if you prefer. Paper is provided.

· Casual, comfortable clothing. Watch the weather for appropriate outdoor wear.

FYI: Camp Coniston is NOT heated.

September is Hunger Action Month - During the month of September, all Food Shelves and Food Banks are trying to create awareness of hunger nationwide. The color orange is used throughout this month long event to help create awareness. Did you notice the change at the Haven?

dollar donated to the Haven FOOD SHELF in September. This is a great opportunity to double your monetary donation to the Haven. Simply write ‘Food Shelf’ in the memo section of your check. Please be as generous as possible!*

Brookside Eucharist Sunday Service

St. Paul's leads a half hour Eucharist service at Brookside Nursing Home second Sunday of the month from September to June. Volunteers come at 1:45 and the service begins at 2pm.

We will lead a service this Sunday, 11th.

Welcome to *Building Bridges!*

St. Paul's 2016 Retreat at Camp Coniston in Croydon, NH

On Saturday, September 17th from 9:00 to 4:00

*Carpoolers will gather at St. Paul's Saturday morning around 8:00 AM. *Meet at St. Paul's parking lot. We will depart for Camp Coniston at 8:15. You can choose to drive or leave your car in the parking lot for the day. Some people are driving there directly. Car poolers will return to St. Paul’s following the closing Eucharist. Directions from St. Paul’s*. For GPS the name is Camp Coniston-YMCA at 24 Main Camp Road, Croydon, NH:* 22 miles, 28 minutes from St. Paul’s. Take I-89 South to Exit 13, Grantham/Eastman. Turn right off the exit ramp, onto Route #10 for 0.6 miles (pass a gas station, Dunkin Donuts and the Grantham Fire Station). Take first left (after Dunbar Hill Rd. on right): Rt. 114 (see small Coniston Sign and Retreat Sign). First right (1.1 miles) onto Stoney Brook Rd. (small Coniston sign and Retreat Sign). 2 miles to Coniston Rd. on right (steeply down). Main Camp Road is the second left. Parking is by the office and out along the entrance road.

*Food: *Coffee and coffee cakes are provided before 9 in the morning. Lunch sandwich makings (cold cuts, cheese and breads) and drinks are provided.* Please bring a salad or cookies for lunch, or snack foods for breaks. *

No donation is necessary. The camp and food are within our budget.

*Agenda: *We will start at 9. Plan to arrive earlier for coffee and settle in. In the morning there will be a story to reflect on, then exercises in tools for spiritual bridge building, then exploration of bridging to other people. There will be a 2 hour break around lunch. There will be a lifeguard and if it is warm enough swimming. Lawn games. Relaxing. There is a trail along the lake. If it rains there is plenty of indoor space for games. In the afternoon we will play some more with attunement. Closing worship will begin at 3 and end at 4.

Youth: Young people will participate with everyone. They will not be separate.

Some possible things to bring for yourself or to share:

  • A favorite snack or baked goods to share.

  • Two stones that feel comfortable in your hands and are large enough to click together for an attunement exercise.

  • Outdoor or indoor games and/or musical instruments for free choice time.

  • Comfort items (pillow, blanket) or free time materials (camera, knitting, book).

  • A pen or a device, markers, and journal, if you prefer. Paper is provided.

  • Casual, comfortable clothing. Watch the weather for appropriate outdoor wear.

*FYI: Camp Coniston is NOT heated. *

*St. Paul's Rummage Sale - August 20 - *The Outreach Committee is planning another rummage sale so please plan your summer sorting accordingly!

This event benefits us all -- we can clean out closets and storage tubs for a good cause and customers can buy (most) all items for 25 cents. The hours of the sale are 9--12 AM on the 20th. The items we accept and sell are:

  • Clothing, especially children’s school clothes in good condition

· Boots and shoes

· Winter wear: coats, hats, mittens, and scarves

There will also be a Boutique with items for more than 25 cents. Watch for details about drop-off in future Announcements.

Parish Discretionary Fund next week* – September 4th *– On the first Sunday of each month the loose offering and any checks marked discretionary fund in the memo is given to the Parish Discretionary Fund. This fund is used to help meet the needs of people in our area during difficult times in their lives. The funds are generally used to help with electric bills or car repairs, rent or securing a security deposit for a family. The need has been extremely high with requests coming in almost every day and we currently have no funds. Please be as generous as you are able. This is an important ministry of our Parish. Published in 2014, *this NY Times bestseller provides an unusual window on racism in our day. St. Paul's began an intentional conversation about racial justice this Lent when we met at the Kilton Library, along with community neighbors, using Ta-Nehisi Coates's book. We will continue that conversation in a more intimate context during two remaining Wednesday evening discussions August 17th, from 7:00 to 8:15 PM.

*St. Paul's Rummage Sale - August 20 - *The Outreach Committee is planning another rummage sale so please plan your summer sorting accordingly!

This event benefits us all -- we can clean out closets and storage tubs for a good cause and customers can buy (most) all items for 25 cents. The hours of the sale are 9--12 AM on the 20th. The items we accept and sell are:

  • Clothing, especially children’s school clothes in good condition

· Boots and shoes

· Winter wear: coats, hats, mittens, and scarves

Parish Discretionary Fund This week* – August 7* – On the first Sunday of each month the loose offering and any checks marked discretionary fund in the memo is given to the Parish Discretionary Fund. This fund is used to help meet the needs of people in our area during difficult times in their lives. The funds are generally used to help with electric bills or car repairs, rent or securing a security deposit for a family. The need has been extremely high with requests coming in almost every day and we currently have no funds. Please be as generous as you are able. This is an important ministry of our Parish. Lilly Cadow is singing Sunday, August 7*. *Lilly was our choir director this past year. She is preparing to go off to college at the Manhattan School of Music in the fall. We welcome her back as she shares her beautiful voice.

Church Gardens* - *growth in our gardens is abundant with flowers as well as weeds. Anne and Holly are in need of one or two volunteers to help them keep ahead of the jolly green weeds that flourish in a blink of an eye. If you have some extra time to help us weed August and September, please contact Anne or Holly. Thank you.

*Summer Lunch Thank You! *We had another fantastic summer lunch program thanks to St. Paul's. We served 190 lunches for the week and also delivered 50 snack bags to the Take a Bite Out of Hunger Program in Hartford. Thanks so much for your incredible generosity; donating food, money and your time to prepare the food. It was great to have so many people turn out to prepare the lunches every day. The AmeriCorps volunteer thanked us and said the children really looked forward to our lunches every day!

The Take A Bite Out of Hunger program is running out of the Hartford Middle School every morning and they are still in need of food donations. They are currently feeding 70 adults and 20 children every day. If you would like to donate food items such as, (granola bars, juice boxes, cereal and shelf stable prepared meals) they would gladly accept them at the Middle School cafeteria, which is staffed by a volunteer every morning from 9:00-12:00.

Thank you all so much for meeting the needs of so many in our community and supporting this wonderful outreach program!

The Upper Valley Haven’s Top Five Needs Are - cereal, soup, shelf-stable milk, black beans and cheese.

*SUMMER LUNCH THANK YOU! *We had another fantastic summer lunch program thanks to St. Paul's. We served 190 lunches for the week and also delivered 50 snack bags to the Take a Bite Out of Hunger Program in Hartford. Thanks so much for your incredible generosity; donating food, money and your time to prepare the food. It was great to have so many people turn out to prepare the lunches every day. The AmeriCorps volunteer thanked us and said the children really looked forward to our lunches every day!

The Take A Bite Out of Hunger program is running out of the Hartford Middle School every morning and they are still in need of food donations. They are currently feeding 70 adults and 20 children every day. If you would like to donate food items such as, (granola bars, juice boxes, cereal and shelf stable prepared meals) they would gladly accept them at the Middle School cafeteria, which is staffed by a volunteer every morning from 9:00-12:00.

Thank you all so much for meeting the needs of so many in our community and supporting this wonderful outreach program!

PARISH DISCRETIONARY FUND NEXT WEEK* – August 7* – On the first Sunday of each month the loose offering and any checks marked discretionary fund in the memo is given to the Parish Discretionary Fund. This fund is used to help meet the needs of people in our area during difficult times in their lives. The funds are generally used to help with electric bills or car repairs, rent or securing a security deposit for a family. The need has been extremely high with requests coming in almost every day and we currently have no funds. Please be as generous as you are able. This is an important ministry of our Parish. *DINNER CHURCH – AUGUST 11 *– Our next Dinner Church will be on Thursday, August 11 at 6:00 PM in the parish Hall. This is an opportunity to come together over and informal Eucharist to worship God and share dinner with our friends and neighbors. In Dinner Church Communion and dinner are interwoven for a different type of worship experience. All are Welcome!

KNIT AND PURL FELLOWSHIP* - *meets 1st and 3rd Monday of the month at 6:30 at the Parish House. All people and all handcrafts are welcome. With extra Prayer Shawls being collected on an ongoing basis, Scott has asked we expand our Prayer Shawl Ministry to places of need in the wider community. Anyone who enjoys knitting or crocheting at home or at a Knit and Purl gathering are welcome to contribute prayer shawls to this ministry. Published in 2014, *this NY Times bestseller provides an unusual window on racism in our day. St. Paul's began an intentional conversation about racial justice this Lent when we met at the Kilton Library, along with community neighbors, using Ta-Nehisi Coates's book. We will continue that conversation in a more intimate context during two remaining Wednesday evening discussions August 17th, from 7:00 to 8:15 PM.

     Come on one or all of these dates as your schedule allows -- and

bring a friend. The Concerned About Racial Justice group will determine location by the interest expressed, so please sign up at church or call/email the church office (802-295-5415). This event benefits us all -- we can clean out closets and storage tubs for a good cause and customers can buy (most) all items for 25 cents. The hours of the sale are 9--12 AM on the 20th. The items we accept and sell are:

  • Clothing, especially children’s school clothes in good condition

· Boots and shoes

· Winter wear: coats, hats, mittens, and scarves

There will also be a Boutique with items for more than 25 cents. Watch for details about drop-off in future Announcements.

Listen Community Dinner* - *A very BIG ‘thank you’ to all those who prepared salads and bought popsicles for the Listen Community Dinner on Monday, July 18th. We served 117 meals which included 1sts, 2nds, and take home meals. A very special thanks to all the volunteers who helped prepare foods in the Listen Kitchen and serve the meal, a team effort. The hard work from everyone made the dinner a huge success. Thank you so much!

    We just received word that we will be serving 38 lunches a day this year.

    St. Paul's has participated in this program for many years. We along with 8 other area churches agree to provide a week’s worth of lunches at the Northwoods and Hollow Drive residences. These are children that receive free and reduced lunches during the school year. This program insures they will continue to receive nourishing lunches throughout the summer months.

    There are many ways you can help. We will need food donations, people to help prepare lunches daily and help the Sunday before to set up the lunch bags and stuffing them with non-perishable items. We have had many people over the last several years that have made monetary donations to help defray the food costs which has been very helpful.

    A sign up sheet has been hung in the Parish Hall for food donations and help making lunches. If you have any questions please feel free to call or email me! Barb Coulter

St. Paul's Gardens - Mother nature and our gardens are working well together producing glorious flowers as well as multitude of weeds. Anne and I are looking for two or three parishioners who could pitch in to help us weed. We would greatly appreciate extra help July and August. I attend the gardens early mornings or late afternoons. If you have time to help us weed, please contact Anne or Holly. Many thanks, Holly.

*St. Paul's Rummage Sale - August 20 - *The Outreach Committee is planning another rummage sale so please plan your summer sorting accordingly!

This event benefits us all -- we can clean out closets and storage tubs for a good cause and customers can buy (most) all items for 25 cents. The hours of the sale are 9--12 AM on the 20th. The items we accept and sell are:

  • Clothing, especially children’s school clothes in good condition

· Boots and shoes

· Winter wear: coats, hats, mittens, and scarves

There will also be a Boutique with items for more than 25 cents. Watch for details about drop-off in future Announcements.

*Weston Priory - *Friday, 15th, Holly will be going to Weston Priory for 5:15 service. If you would like to join her, please contact Holly. She will be leaving at 3:30 pm and will return between 7:30pm and 8:00pm.

UVIP Updates:

 SURJ

As we hear news of yet another police shooting with circumstances yet to be clarified, consider joining SURJ (Showing Up for Racial Justice) in their vigil Monday evening, from 5:30 to 6 p.m., on the Dartmouth green, across from the Hanover Inn. This is one simple way to stand in solidarity with people of color in the wake of violence.
