*2016 Summer Lunch Program and Beyond *

  • Please save the date- this year's Summer Lunch Program will be *July 18-22nd*!

We just received word that we will be serving 38 lunches a day this year.

St. Paul's has participated in this program for many years. We along with 8 other area churches agree to provide a week’s worth of lunches at the Northwoods and Hollow Drive residences. These are children that receive free and reduced lunches during the school year. This program insures they will continue to receive nourishing lunches throughout the summer months.

There are many ways you can help. We will need food donations, people to help prepare lunches daily and help the Sunday before to set up the lunch bags and stuffing them with non-perishable items. We have had many people over the last several years that have made monetary donations to help defray the food costs which has been very helpful.

A sign up sheet has been hung in the Parish Hall for food donations and help making lunches. If you have any questions please feel free to call or email me!

  • AND NEW this year, on Thursday July 21st St. Paul's will also be participating in a new program initiative in Hartford called Take A Bite Out of Hunger. We will be making 50 snack bags that will be distributed at the Hartford Middle School. We thought this program paired well with the Summer Lunch Program and we will be making the snack bags along with the lunches that day for delivery.

A signup sheet for food donations can be found alongside the Summer Lunch program ones. There is also a flyer that explains a bit more about the program.

Thank you so much for considering helping with this program. St. Paul's is such a special place, I appreciate all the support for our community outreach programs. Barb Coulter

The need has been extremely high with requests coming in almost every day and we currently have no funds. Please be as generous as you are able. This is an important ministry of our Parish. Thank you, Scott

*2016 Summer Lunch Program and Beyond *

  • Please save the date- this year's Summer Lunch Program will be *July 18-22nd*!

We just received word that we will be serving 38 lunches a day this year.

St. Paul's has participated in this program for many years. We along with 8 other area churches agree to provide a weeks worth of lunches at the Northwoods and Hollow Drive residences.

*Happy Father’s Day *to all fathers and grandfather and all men who are role models to our children.

Bargain Bin *Reflection- Party for Patti! - Friday, June 17 at 6:30PM - *At the kick-off meeting March 11, Patti said that her birthday fell the day after Bargain Bin and I promised that it would be a party for Patti. Then I forgot. So this is make-up. Friday, June 17, at 6:30 pm in the Parish House. Dessert provided. We’ve had some time to reflect. Let’s share our thoughts. What went well? Some things seemed just right! And we work so well together. What needs to be changed for next year? God does not seem bent on making the Bargain Bin smaller, but we may need to take some steps in that direction, or figure out how to practically accommodate the size it has become. We have lots to get creative about Friday. It wouldn’t hurt to talk with others in your section to get the ideas going. We will need a new chair or chairs next year, too. If you cannot make it Friday, please email me your thoughts so they can be shared. Jon

*COME TO DINNER Follow-up - *Our first Come to Dinner Event was held on Monday May 9, 2016. Twenty-two (22) individuals shared a time of fellowship, worship and conversation. United Thank Offering (UTO) Ingathering – June 12 - We have selected June 12th as this year's UTO Ingathering Sunday. I realize it is short notice. Even so there is still time to start acknowledging special moments for good things that have happened by putting a coin aside to honor it. Thank you Janie Davis.

The Concerned about Racial Justice group is thinking about summer fun and continuing the Lenten conversation. Would you be interested in participating in a small group book study? Would you like to host one? Could be in the evening with cold drinks, possibly beginning with a potluck? If so, let Scott know at the church office or send an email to katy.chaffee@gmail.com. The group is currently previewing some possible book selections and would provide some discussion questions. Glad to talk with you further if you are interested.

· From the Garden Department:

When you are spring cleaning, don't forget the garden and yard department. Now is the time to dig any perennial plants from the garden and label them. If you need pots or assistance, please let Anne Jenisch (802-685-2067) know. If you do have plants to share, please make sure they have a label with name and flower color so we don't have to guess about it. Any extra tools and decorations are also appreciated as long as they are in usable condition. For those of you who don't have a green thumb, a donation of a six pack (the plant kind, not beverage) from a local nursery would be great. Thank you much, Anne

Daylight Savings Time begins March 13th – Remember to spring ahead Saturday night so to be on time Sunday and not be really late for church!

March 11 - Bargain Bin Kick-off Meeting Dear Chairs and “Chair-Like People”, The time has come to put in motion the astounding, stupendous, biggest show on earth, there’s nothing else like it : (drum roll) BARGAIN BIN. Let’s gather next Friday night, March 11, at the Parish House, at 6:30, to "light the fuse”, “pull the switch” , “wake up the sleeping giant”, “poke the dog”, etc, etc. And we'll revive Jeff and Jill’s tradition of eating pie and ice cream to start off in a celebrative mood? So what if it’s LENT? I’m up for making a bunch of pies and I may call a couple of you for a single one. I’m sure we can think of a few things to start doing (sow seed, list-serve publicity), hopefully nothing too onerous. Yours, Jon

Ukrainian Easter Eggs Workshop - A workshop to learn how to make Ukrainian Easter Eggs will be offered on Saturday, March 12th from 2 to 5pm. It's a meditative way to work in Lent. Supplies will be provided. A donation to cover the cost is appreciated. Adults and youth age 12 and up are welcome, and we recommend that an adult accompany each youth (we'll be working with an open candle flame and uncooked eggs). Please contact Pam or Carl Hanson to sign up or if you have questions.

*Lenten Book Study: *St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in White River Junction is sponsoring a four-session book discussion of the National Book Award finalist Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates. The meetings will be held at the Kilton Library (80 Main Street, West Lebanon) from 6:30 to 8:00 on March 2, March 9 and March 16. These discussions are free and open to the public. Books are available online and in some local bookstores. There will also be copies available at the first meeting. If you plan to attend, an RSVP to the church office would be appreciated. Email stpaulsvt@gmail.com or call (802) 295-5415and leave a message. For more information, contact Diane Root (droottrrm@aol.com) or Katy Chaffee (katy.chaffee@gmail.com).

Lenten Evening Prayer – Join us for Evening Prayer, Monday through Friday in the chapel at 5:30. This is a lovely way to end a busy day.

Lenten Ingathering for Episcopal Relief and Development*: *This Sunday is the designated day for the annual Lenten ingathering for Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD). As most of you know, ERD is the outreach arm of the national Episcopal Church. It responds to disasters around the world and also supports development in Third World countries. Vermont received a relief grant to the diocese after Hurricane Irene. Usually ERD works with local Anglican churches or other groups to deliver this aid. Please support the ERD by including a donation in the Sunday offering. Checks should be made out to St. Paul's with "ERD" on the memo line. Thanks for your help! Kristin Wood

Brookside Service We will have service at Brookside Nursing Home March 13th. Volunteers arrive 1:45 to help set up the Sun Room for service. The service begins at 2:00 with hymns, prayers, sharing of the Gospel and Eucharist. The service ends at 2:30. On March 13th, David, our pianist, will be at a concert. *Do you know anyone who could take his place Sunday afternoon? *Holly

*Altar Guild Meeting and cleaning/polishing *- The Altar Guild will be meeting March 19th at 9:30 am in the Parish Hall. We will hold a brief meeting to set the calendar for the next six months, followed by cleaning and polishing to get ready for Easter. We would love to have you join us! Feel free to ask Judi Shank or Barb Coulter if you have any questions.

Listen Community Center Dinners - March 21st, we will be serving Chicken Vegetable Casserole and Gingerbread and whip cream for dessert. We need *minimum of six volunteers who can come between 3 and 3:30 March 21st *to help prepare salads, fruit, and bread that is given to the Listen Center. The meal is served at5pm and ends at 6pm, same time we leave the center. Sign up sheet for March 21st meal is posted on Parish Hall bulletin. Please help by signing up to provide food or volunteer in the kitchen. Your help makes a difference! If you have questions, please contact Holly.

*Knit and Purl Fellowship - *meets 6:30 at Parish House 1st and 3rd Monday of the month. Because there is much happening March 21st, we will NOT meet that evening. We will meet April 4th and 18th.

*Weston Priory - *I have attended services at Weston Priory over the last ten years and recently attended Friday evening service and this past Saturday 11:30 service. Dear Friends at St. Paul,

Thank you for last week’s amazing welcome for Beth and me. The warm welcome before worship, the Blessing of Welcoming with the laying on of hands, the beautiful reception following with amazing food and fellowship, and the beautiful flowers for our garden were so gratefully received. Thank you for a wonderful and joy filled beginning of doing ministry together.

Peace and Blessings, Scott and Beth

Dear Members of the St. Paul's Community,
An Easter Appeal, in a normal year, would have arrived at your home by snail mail, asking on colored stationary for a special Easter offering in a dedicated envelope.  This is not a normal year.

This year your Vestry has been very caught up in its responsibility to take the recommendation of the Ministry Discernment Committee and decide, on behalf of all of you, to call a new Rector. It is appropriate that this should be happening at Holy Week, when we celebrate Jesus' having taken the plunge, whereby he leads us through death and resurrection into the new covenant of love for one another.

The process is not yet complete, but we hope to make an announcement on Sunday, April 12th at the 10 o'clock service.  So this Easter you get a short email, thanking you for your prayers and support throughout these years and especially now, and asking you to once again be generous in your offerings this Easter.
With love,  Jon

Attendance
Jane Carroll, Jon Chaffee, Barb Coulter, Pete Lapré, Dede Mackie, Andrew Pillsbury, Susan Pillsbury, Bev Taylor. Barbara Rector attended as a visitor.

The meeting opened with a Bible study of Mark 1:4-11 at 6:30.

Parishioner Concerns

The meeting began with Barbara Rector’s concerns about two issues: people from outside the parish borrowing church equipment such as tables and coffee pots, and solicitations during coffee hour. The Vestry agreed that these are concerns for the entire parish and that we can raise them at our first quarterly meeting. Establishing a general policy for these and related issues, such as announcements at the end of services, and sales of group merchandise is very difficult. The Vestry thanked Barbara for raising these issues.

Minutes

The minutes from the December 16th meeting were unanimously approved as amended.

Financial Report

Jon reported that the parish audit is finished. Pete moved to accept the audit and forward it to the Diocese, Andrew seconded the motion. The Vestry unanimously approved the motion. Floor refinishing in the Parish hall and hallway has been completed. However, Jon reported that the cost was $1075, almost twice the anticipated amount, because extra work and chemicals were required to remove the products previously applied to these floors. Jon has agreed that the Parish will pay for tuning and a humidifier for Jean Chambers’ piano in the sanctuary. Tuning will cost $105 and the humidifier will cost $625. As soon as the snow is off the roof, Jon and Andrew will work together to get bids for reroofing the Parish hall. There is $114,000 in pledges for 2015, $5000 less than last year. Jon stressed that there is a small number of dedicated members who are contributing more than their pledges, as well as those making generous non-pledge donations. The Vestry unanimously accepted the Financial Report.

Vestry Membership

Jon thanked Bev and Carl for their service on the Vestry. He has asked Bev Barton and Cindy Dale to join the Vestry and they have accepted.

Annual Meeting

The Vestry reviewed the agenda for the Annual Meeting on January 24th. Bishop Ely will be making his annual visit on January 25 and will attend the Annual Meeting. The Vestry will host coffee hour the 25th.

Closing

The meeting ended with prayer at 8:30. The next meeting of the Vestry will be on February 17, at 6:30 PM following the Parish Shrove Tuesday dinner. All parishioners are welcome to attend.

What is Lent?

The name Lent comes from an Old English word meaning "spring" reflecting the simultaneous reawakening of the earth.  The forty days of Lent begin with Ash Wednesday culminating in Maundy Thursday and Good Friday leading up to the Easter celebration of the resurrection. To quote the Book of Common Prayer, in preparation for the Paschal feast, Christians observed "a season of penitence and fasting"  (BCP, pp. 264-265) as a preparation for Easter life.  Lent was also a time when those wishing to be baptized were instructed and prepared, making it a season for formation, deepening, and renewal. All Christians are invited "to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer and fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God's holy Word" (BCP, p.265).

How do we, the St. Paul's community, plan to observe this Lenten season?

At the heart of Christian practice is our worship.  Indeed, this commitment is embedded in our baptismal vows:  Will you continue in the Apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of the bread, and in the prayers?  I will, with God’s help.  Here we join with Christ to worship God and be renewed in Spirit.  This Lent we are invited to recall the origins of our worship and the meaning of the actions, prayers and symbols of the Eucharist.  To support this intention, we will begin the Sundays of Lent with a very simple service modeled on the earliest liturgies we can recover, and with a bare sanctuary.  Lent 2 we will celebrate the same service using the language of the Book of Common Prayer, and add a little music.  Beginning with Lent 3 we will expand to our usual service, incorporating just a few elements from Taize and Iona worship.  Also on Lent 3, the Altar Guild will ‘dress’ the sanctuary as the service opens, so that all may appreciate the service they give so graciously.  During some services, there will also be a brief teaching on an element of the service.

Individual practice: what feeds you spiritually?

For many years Lent was known as a time for giving up things, famously chocolate.  More and more, people have come to see it as a time to take on a new practice, or let go of something unhelpful in their lives. The Lenten question is:  What will open your heart and feed your soul?  Reflect on what you need in your life spiritually at this time.  There are classic choices such as adding meditation or prayer, reading the Bible, or service to others.  It could also be very personal, for example a commitment to yourself and to God to address a barrier in your life, challenge your self to take a new risk, etc. We will be praying for each other.  Each day during Lent, we will receive a prayer and short of list of names via e-mail.

The Brothers of the Society of St. John the Evangelist in Boston are offering short daily videos (2 min.) presenting meditation topics with title, It’s Time To…Stop, Pray, Work, Play & Love.  To participate, sign up at www.SSJE.org/time

 Our community practice for Lent

·  Coffee hour is our precious time, not just for sharing food, but more importantly, for welcoming visitors, and connecting with each other about our lives.  This Lent, we are invited to share with each other about 'how were you fed spiritually in this past week?’

·  We ask our community to recommit to donating food for those who are hungry in our community.   The food will be collected in the parish hall and coffee hour will begin by blessing the donations.
